Montessori classrooms are filled with language building activities. Children are exposed to many kinds of literature as well as other language materials to help them grow into readers and writers. Children share literature through picture books, easy readers, and magazines such as Weekly Reader. They practice listening skills with teacher read alouds. They enjoy spending quiet time with books in the classroom library. Each week they are introduced to the “Sound of the Week.” This letter is used in the Mystery Sound Bag, journal practice, and sound boxes. The children also use materials such as the moveable alphabet as they become stronger in their phonetic awareness.

This afternoon our Montessori student has chosen to work with the moveable alphabet. This work requires a special rug with lines, so our student finds the rug in the special place in the classroom. She gets this item out first. - 8000 slideright true 60 bottom 50

Now that her space is prepared, the student finds the work on the shelf. In this case there are two boxes the student needs. This box contains the moveable letters for spelling words. She takes this out first and places it next to the rug on the upper left side. - 8000 slideright true 80 bottom 50

The Montessori student spells her final word, sounding out each letter of the object, making a connection between sound and letter. For students who learn kinesthetically, the moveable alphabet can improve learning and understanding of the letter-sound relationship. - 8000 slideright true 60 bottom 50
Our Montessori searched for the letter P to complete her final word and has found it. Touching the letters and moving them into position is very helpful for some learners. - 5000 slideright true 60 bottom 50
